Šípek Bořek (Prague 1949 - 2016 Prague)

"Bambi" Chair, lacquered metal, brass, creased blue fabric, designed in 1983, made around 1986, numbered 016/60, limited edition of 60 pieces, made for Steltman and Co. Gallery in Amsterdam, 88 x 97 x 45 (Zí)

Published in magazine L’atelier No. 132, Paris, November - December 1988 - a colour photograph on the cover.

In 1968 Bořek Šípek emigrated to Germany and then he studied architecture in Hamburg and philosophy in Stuttgart. After completing his studies he immediately started designing for world famous brands. The year 1983, when he moved from Germany to Amsterdam, where he opened his own architectural and design studio entitled Alterego, was to a large degree a turning point for Bořek Šípek. At the same time he also married Bambi Uden, an English dancer and choreographer. And it was also during this year that he designed his perhaps most famous chair that he named “Bambi” in her honour. Later on this chair was to become an icon of postmodern furniture. First because of its distinctive shape and then also by the combination of materials used that comprised various metals, together with wood and blue silk. Since 1986 Bořek Šípek had been cooperating with the Amsterdam gallery Steltman and Co., for which he created more than 200 designs of glass ,furniture and silver items, that were then produced in limited editions. The Bambi Chair was also offered there in a limited edition of 60 reproductions.
